Welcome To Davis

I've lived in Davis for the past two and a half years. I went to Davis for undergrad (after attending sierra college for 3 years) and completed my B.S. Degree in Animal Biology. Davis is a really cool town literally out in the middle of nowhere. We are about 15 miles West of Sacramento, and about an hour and a half from San Francisco. I don't know why everyone associates Davis with cows, especially since Vacaville is just down highway 80 from us. "Cow-ville"= Vacaville. We do have cows here, we have an on-campus Dairy that is fully functioning. What many may not know is that we also have a goat Dairy on-campus. Davis has a huge campus that stretches across both highway 113 and highway 80. Our school Mascot is a horse (NOT a cow!) and his name is Gunrock. If you are interested, you can google Gunrock's history online, but to make it short he used to be a stallion at Stud at UC Davis and fathered many Calvary horses.
The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is the only veterinary school in the University of California system, ranked joint second nationally. It offers a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, and the world's first Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine degree program. The school has six different academic departments:

  • Anatomy, Physiology & Cell Biology
  • Molecular Biosciences
  • Medicine and Epidemiology
  • Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology
  • Population Health and Reproduction
  • Surgical and Radiological Sciences
Ranking of Top Veterinary Medicine Schools in the US:

1. Cornell University
2. Colorado State University
3. University of California–Davishttp://whichuniversitybest.blogspot.com/2009/09/top-veterinary-medicine-schools.html
Even though Colorado State is ahead of us, I would take Davis over either of the other top two schools. From my experience, Davis is amazing, we're close to the mountains, the ocean, the capital, we have all the sunny weather we need in Davis. (I'm just kidding, it rains a lot here too, but at least we don't get snowed in at Davis). If anyone has specific questions about life in Davis and what their veterinary curriculum is like, feel free to contact me. Please see my future post on the curriculum changes that are happening in the vet school beginning next year.
