Attention Pre-Veterinary Students and Blog Readers

Hi Everyone,

First off, thanks for reading my blog! I really enjoy it when what I write is useful and interesting to others. Second, I created this blog in part to keep a record of my life in veterinary school as well as inform my family and friends about my life so they can keep updated on what I'm doing and why I don't get to visit too often! I also created this blog to answer questions about what it is like getting into vet school and becoming a veterinarian. I want to open this blog up for any questions people may have about life in vet school, although I am quite busy, I am sure I will find time to answer you! So please feel welcome to email me with questions or leave comments on my blog.

Thanks for reading!

I see you named you email address after your horse Leo.Very cool!

I have a question not so much about getting into vet school but about animal care at a vet school.

A few years back I had a dog named Sandy. I loved him so much. He had a tumour in the soft pallet and it was too large for surgery.

Long story short I could not afford the treatments that were offered.
I did call Cornell here in NY to see what the cost would be but the receptionist told me I would have to see a G.P. vet first and have an evaluation. I could not get any cost factors except the first visit was 125.00
So I never went.

Are vet colleges a good place to go for treatments of major illnesses?
Are they less expensive than a private vet?

My dog Rock is an older fellow and just these past two months we have spent 7500.00 for care.

So I am wondering for major surgeries or chemo if it might be a bit less expensive at a school.

Yes! My email address has always been named after Leo, I got the address when he was my horse and it just helped me remember him. I'm sorry to hear about your dog Sandy and your dog Rock, that is never easy to go through. Personally I think there is not much different in costs when you are talking about cancer and chemo therapy. Those are expensive treatments either way, I think that there are specialists at the university that are available and well educated (plus it educates vet students) and I also think there are skilled professionals in private practices. Unfortunately, I don't think that either one is less expensive than the other. I'm sorry you're going through that right now.

It is good to know that others have the same feelings as you do.

My own phrase for this is:

I think of myself often but I don't think too much of myself".

Also it may be good to know that everyone has impostor syndrome.
Ditchdiggers, new mothers, managers etc...... None of us are unique in the sense that what we are feeling or thinking only applies to us and no one else.We all feel this way at one time or another.

I think you really got it covered in statements 1-6.

Good for you to share that and put yourself out there to help others.
